An officer of N.S.W. (Rum) Corps was likely to be one of the biggest land owners in the colony. This was made possible by the corps monopoly in the rum and liqueur trade and the resultant wealth and the influences wielded on them, thus causing misery and poverty to many settlers who were unable to pay the exorbitant prices charged.
